On 17 February, ClimateFiGS and the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) will jointly be hosting a workshop on subnational climate finance and access to climate finance in South Africa. An invite is required to attend.

The workshop will convene practitioners, government officials, and researchers for a focused discussion on current challenges, gaps, and future directions in climate finance. By the end of the session, participants will have identified actionable insights, practical recommendations, and opportunities for collaboration to improve access to and the effective use of climate finance across different types of climate actors in South Africa.

The workshop will be structured into two sessions, each dedicated to a different aspect of climate finance in South Africa.

Session 1: Subnational Climate Finance

This session examines key dimensions of climate finance across national, provincial, and municipal levels in South Africa, with a focus on how funds are allocated, tracked, and translated into outcomes on the ground.

Session 2: Accessing Climate Finance

This session focuses on how different actors in South Africa access climate finance in practice, examining the types of climate finance available and the pathways through which funds move from international and national sources to implementing entities.

This workshop builds on a previous workshop on climate finance in Tanzania. From 26-29 August 2025, ClimateFiGS and Mzumbe University co-designed a series of roundtables with local experts in the country, covering topics such as the subnational allocation of climate finance, the substantive representation of women in climate policy, and the challenges and opportunities of leveraging private capital and carbon markets for climate action.

The insights from these expert roundtables were summarized in comprehensive briefs, highlighting the pressing research areas identified in the discussions. The briefs can be accessed on our output page.
